This week we have a photograph of the Romford Town Swimming Club and its water polo team.
The team would train at the Mawney Road Baths, which opened in 1900 and gave local schools and swimming and diving clubs a place to train.
The picture, taken in the 1900s, is from Romford Heritage by Brian Evans who said in the book: “Their obvious fitness shows the advantage not only of swimming training, but also of living in the Romford countryside.
“When war broke out a few years later in 1914 the recruits from cities and larger towns were generally found to be in very poor health – not that it prevented army doctors from passing them fit for active service.”
