A care programme that provides specialist medical treatment in people’s homes and has received glowing recommendations from patients has launched a consultation into its future.

Havering Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has asked for views on its Intermediate Care Services, incorporating Community Treatment Teams and the Intensive Rehabilitation Service.

The services provide short-term intensive care and support for people experiencing a health or social care crisis.

It aims to allow patients to remain in their own homes as well as supporting those requiring rehabilitation.

Dr Gurdev Saini, clinical director at Havering Clinical Commissioning Group, told a meeting of Havering Council’s Health and Wellbeing Board: “We are providing specialist services in people’s own homes to reduce the number that need to be admitted to hospital.”

The two services have already been shortlisted for a Health Service Journal value award and received high satisfaction scores from patients.

Rose McMurray, 80, of Collier Row, Havering, was suffering from breathing problems and looking to go to A&E when she contacted the service who helped her receive treatment at home.

She said: “I would really recommend it. They were efficient. I had different nurses and they were all very nice. They sorted me out. They reassured me and I didn’t have to rush off to A&E or anything.”

The community treatment team includes doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers and others who are available from 8am to 10pm seven days a week.

The consultation looks to continue the services and reduce community bed provision in hospitals, the use of which has fallen sharply.

The consultation will run until October 1. To have your say go to surveymonkey.com/s/intermediate-care

A public event will be held at Romford Library, from 4pm-7pm, on Thursday.
