St George’s Hospital wait could be over as GPs outline plans

A multi-million pound health centre in Hornchurch will have GP, walk-in and community care services should plans be given the green light.
After more than two years of uncertainty over the future of the old St George’s Hospital site, doctors in charge of commissioning Havering’s health services have revealed their intentions for the new centre of excellence.
They come as its owners, NHS Property Services, announced it has submitted plans to Havering Council for the project, which will also include 300 new homes being built on the site.
The old Suttons Lane hospital site has been empty since it closed in October 2012.
Dr Gurdev Saini, chairman of the St George’s Hospital board, said: “We’re pleased to be one step closer to achieving our goal of providing a new health centre.

“Havering Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is now developing a detailed business case for the centre – which will include primary, urgent and community care services, voluntary sector and education space along with services specifically for frail older people.
“We’re working hard to get this right so that we can minimise any delays in the process going forward.

“It’s testament to the determination and stamina of GP colleagues and our CCG team that we are still pushing ahead, jumping through all the hoops we are asked to, and working to deliver the new health and wellbeing centre.”
Once the council has considered the application, the land will be marketed to developers and the buyer will decide on the final details of the health centre.
Andrew Strange, NHS Property Services’ head of planning and development, said the “exciting” scheme will help meet both housing and healthcare needs for the borough’s growing population.
“We have worked with architects to design a housing scheme that is high quality and fits well with the existing makeup of the area,” he explained. “We have received good feedback from local people on these proposals and are grateful for their input.”
NHS Property said the housing scheme includes retaining some of the existing buildings, as well as creating new green spaces.
