Romford’s long wait for a new leisure centre is nearly over

Building work on Romford’s long-awaited leisure centre should begin within eight months, it was announced tonight.
The end of the four-year-saga appears to be imminent after supermarket chain Morrisons signed a contract agreeing to complete a land swap, which will allow the building of the four-storey leisure facility, in Western Road, to begin.
Havering Council’s leader described the news as “positive” when he told a meeting of full council just hours ago.
He added that the authority was ready to turn to the courts if the supermarket group fails to keep to the agreement.
The new centre, plans for which were revealed in 2011, will bring leisure facilities, including a swimming pool and ice rink, to the heart of the town.
