A new specialist children’s health centre that will support youngsters with special needs has been opened by a paralympic swimmer.
The Acorn Centre, in London Road, Romford, was formally opened by Mayor of Havering, Cllr Brian Eagling, and paralympic swimmer Amy Marren, yesterday.
The centre will be run by the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT).
Amy, 17, said: “I am missing my right hand. But thanks to the help and support from NELFT services over the years, it has not stopped me achieving in any way.
“NELFT healthcare staff really do ensure patients reach their potential, and for that they need to be thanked.”
The centre will provide services for those with physical, sensory, communication, emotional or learning difficulties from birth to 19-years-old.
John Brouder, NELFT chief executive, said: “If you are a family who cares for a child with several different conditions and or disabilities, it is hard to get to all the appointments at the different healthcare facilities.
