The Crown Pub, London Road, could be turned into 24 flats despite the building being on the council’s list of historic interest.

Havering Council’s planning committee will decide tonight on whether to give planning permission for the pub to be turned into flats.

The plans were recommended for approval under the condition the applicant Kundra Holdings LLP legally agrees to a section 106, which would oblige the developer to contribute financially to some of the council’s other developments.

From the money paid to Havering Council, £18,000 would be spent on providing affordable housing, £144,000 on educational purposes and £24,000 on improving the cycling route between the The Crown and Romford town centre.

The early 19th century pub is described as a “prominent social landmark” on the council’s list of important historic buildings.

The development would see an extension on the side of the building being demolished and 12 one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom flats created.

The application states the developer aims to “improve the tired appearance of the property in order to preserve the future use of the building” and the facades onto London Road and Spring Gardens would be retained.

The pub, a popular location for groups to meet before heading over the road to Romford Greyhound Stadium, re-opened in November 2014 after being closed for a year and the lease would be sold if plans were agreed.
