Havering residents showed their charitable side for Children In Need.

Residents baked, donned their pyjamas and even had a special visit from Pudsey Bear as part of the BBC’s annual appeal last Friday.

Havering College of Further And Higher Education held a number of fundraising events at various locations, which has so far raised more than �150.

Greggs the bakers and Pudsey Bear spent a day at the Ardleigh Green Campus selling Children in Need themed biscuits and cakes.

The giant cuddly bear also spent time with some of his biggest fans – babies and toddlers at the Havering College Stepping Stones Day Nursery.

Students at the Havering College Quarles Campus in Harold Hill organised competitions, ran a stall, offered nail painting and dressed in their pyjamas to raise cash.

The sports department ran a ‘Beat the Goalie’ contest with goalkeepers from the Romford Football Academy course guarding against the penalty attempts.

Havering College head of student services Margo Lindsay said: “Everyone who has taken part in Children in Need has been having fun and, most importantly, raising money for a good cause.”

Officers from Gooshays Safer Neighbourhood team gave crime prevention advice to a very special guest- Pudsey.

PCSOs Megan Thomas and Alannna Yeomans were surprised to bump into Pudsey at Farnham Road, Harold Hill.

PCSO Yeomans said “It was quite a shock to meet the real Pudsey in Harold Hill.

“It just shows that you never know who you are going to meet”

Students at Sanders Draper School in Suttons Lane, Hornchurch also got in on the act raising �1,171.35

Year seven students at the school baked cakes and cookies and sold them at break time and lunch times.

They also held a non uniform day and donated �1.

Karen Grandison, community development officer at the school, who was involved in the event said: “We are all really proud.

“The year seven students came up with the idea themselves and the day went really well.”

Coopers’ Company and Coborn students, Holly Ginger and Yasmin Manchee-both 11, raised �213 for the appeal after setting up a stall in Berkeley Drive, Hornchurch selling homemade cakes.

Holly has set up the charity stall for Children In Need for the last four years.

Sonya Ginger, Holly’s mum said: “I think she has done really well.

“She organises it all herself and gets help from her friends.”

This year’s appeal raised a total of �26.7 million, exceeding last year’s sum.

The money raised will go to help children across the UK.
