Residents could soon be able to access information about Rainham’s colourful history at their fingertips thanks to a grant of £20,000.
Havering Council has been awarded the funds from Veolia Havering Riverside Trust to digitise exhibits about the history of Rainham.
Called Rainham: a village near the Thames, the project will tell the history of Rainham and its surrounding areas of South Hornchurch and Wennington.
It will focus on its agricultural past and relationship with the River Thames from the Norman Church.
The project is set to be undertaken by library volunteers, who will be trained in heritage, research, conservation of material and basic cataloguing.
The digitised collection is set to be available by spring 2014 and users will be able to access the items on the council’s library website.
Cllr Andrew Curtin, Cabinet member for culture, towns and communities said: “This grant will make a valuable contribution to keeping Rainham’s rich history alive and available at people’s fingertips from anywhere in the world.”
