With temperatures set to drop over the weekend, Havering Council’s gritters are on standby to keep the area moving.

Environment boss Cllr Barry Tebbutt said: “We are expecting a cold snap over the next few days but we will be out and about keeping the borough moving. We grit the roads and pavements in priority order and we will always do the main roads and emergency routes first.

“Why not start off this new year by being a caring neighbour and checking that any elderly neighbours are warm and well?”

The Met Office has issued some tips for people clearing paths, including removing snow as early as possible before it has a chance to compact down, using salt and grit rather than water, and making sure the snow is not cleared in such a way that piles of it block drains or entrances.

It also recommends checking on elderly neighbours and offering to clear their paths for them.
