Residents were in for a surprise last week, when they returned home from work to find the council’s contractors painting yellow lines on their road.

This might not seem unusual except Woodhall Crescent, Hornchurch, is a private road and has never had yellow lines on it before.

Louise Drake who lives on the road said she could not understand how the error was made and called it a waste of money.

“There was yellow lines all across the actual front of the driveways,” she said.

“It was absolutely crazy.

“The neighbours were up in arms phoning the council which said it was a mistake.”

A spokeswoman for Havering Council added: “The council’s highways contractor painted yellow lines on Woodhall Crescent near the Wingletye Lane end. “They mistakenly continued the line along a section of Woodhall Crescent where it should not have been, however, the mistake was rectified within hours.”

The yellow lines had to be burned off and the cost of the error was met by the contractors.
