Teenaged girls are a rare site on the “drifting” scene but a Havering College racer has just landed her first sponsors in the motorsport world.

Sixteen-year-old Jodie Rasburn, of Potiphar place, Warley, has been driving since she was six and drifting since she was 13 and has now being sponsored by Abbey Motorsport and GyroDrift as she starts to race more competitively.

Jodie tells the Recorder there are only three other girls she knows of who drifts -- a driving technique were you intentionally slide the car through corners.

“I will be entering the British Drifting Championship as the youngest girl.

“When I was six my dad started teaching me.

“The first time I went I went straight into the wall. I got so angry and my dad got me another car and I went straight back out there.”

Influenced by her racing career, Jodie is studying motor mechanics at the Hornchurch college.

She has recently upgraded to a faster car -- the 270bhp Nissan S14A -- and will be taking it to the championships where she will be awarded points for speed, angle and showmanship.

She said: “It’s all about learning how to control an out-of-control car.”
