»Bottles of booze are being marked by police officers to catch off-licences selling alcohol to children.
Officers from Cranham Safer Neighbourhoods Team having been visiting shops in their ward to remind staff to ask for ID when there is any doubt about the customer’s age.
Officers daub a special code on alcoholic drinks which can be traced back to a particular shop.
Sgt Pete Blackburn of the team said: “Antisocial behaviour by a small number of young people continues to be a concern to many local residents.
“We have found that alcoholic drink is often involved.
“By marking the bottles, we are able to identify those shops that continue to break the law by selling drink to underage young people. These shops could then face prosecution. This is just one tactic we have employed to tackle the problem of antisocial behaviour.”
