Havering 90 Joggers put sole to street to raise Christmas cash for Hornchurch children’s charity First Step

Runners last month donned festive get-up and took to the streets to raise cash for needy youngsters.
Twenty athletes from Havering 90 Joggers stepped out in Hornchurch and Upminster on Sunday, December 22, dressed as Father Christmas and his elves and fairies.
But rather than dishing gifts out, the group was collecting coins from passers-by as they ran from Hornchurch Sports Centre to Upminster town centre and back again.
The £207.14 that went into Santa’s sack will help children’s charity First Step – which is based in Hornchurch – continue providing its services in 2014.
The Tangmere Crescent organisation offers the families of children with special needs a place to share experiences and support each other. It works with more than 100 pre-school children.
The club’s Jeff Fenton said: “We have a member, Liz Preston, who’s quite involved with First Step as a volunteer, and we’re based in Havering so we like to fundraise for First Step and St Francis Hospice.”
Jeff estimated the joggers had raised more than £1,000 in the last few years for the charity.
First Step CEO Tricia Cowdrey said: “We are all extremely grateful to Keith from Havering 90 Joggers and extend our thanks to all the club runners who took part and, of course, all those who donated along the way.
“This is a wonderful amount, and we will use these funds to provide support for families of pre-school children with special needs and/or disabilities who live in Havering.”
The fundraiser is an annual event for the runners, who meet weekly at the club room upstairs at Hornchurch Sports Centre. Last year they raised an impressive £400 treading the same streets.
