EMERGENCY teams locked down a Harold Hill street last night (Thursday October 7) after an elderly man was found dead in his home.
Police and crews from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) discovered the body, in Dorking Road, at around 8.15pm.
The alarm was raised by concerned neighbours who had not seen the man, believed to be in his late eighties, for around a week.
Fire crews, some in breathing equipment, closed the area for a number of hours as a precautionary measure, following a suspected gas leak.
A fire spokesman said: “The house was in a very bad state of disrepair and smelled bad but there was no chemical incident.”
A cause of death has not yet been established but foul play is not suspected, a police spokesman said.
She added: “It’s early days, but it seems it is one of those incredibly sad stories in which an elderly person living alone has died and been dead for some time.”
