A “despicable” electrician who overcharged a vulnerable elderly customer and then stole £3,500 from her purse has been jailed.

Darren Walter, 47, of Colne Drive, Harold Hill, was sentenced for six and a half years on Tuesday, after he was found guilty of one count of robbery and three counts of fraud.

The electrician was found guilty after he overcharged a deaf woman in her 60s for work and then snatched £3,500 from her purse whilst discussing the bill.

He was sentenced to six years imprisonment on June 15 for the robbery and six months imprisonment for the fraud offences, which will run consecutively, at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Det Con Billy Baxter of Barking and Dagenham CID said: “This was a despicable crime targeting a vulnerable woman in her own home. Walter overcharged the woman for work he had carried out and then, when challenged, robbed her of cash.

“I can only hope the lengthy sentenced handed down to him offers some form of comfort to his victim.”
