Students at Havering Sixth Form College had a special visit from a serial fundraiser as part of a special campaign to recruit more blood donors.

Lloyd Scott joined NHS Blood and Transplant staff at the college in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch recently.

Lloyd spoke to the students about how he needed blood during his treatment for leukaemia and for two hip replacements.

He said: “It’s incredible how a human body can adapt and the benefit of receiving a donation. I have gone on to raise over £5.5 million for a number of charities - the knock on effect just through saving me has been absolutely immense.”

The regional campaign to recruit more blood donors is called Step Up, Sign Up, Share.

NHS Blood and Transplant needs more than 1,000 new registrations every day to replace those donors who can no longer donate.

Young people are especially important as they make up around 40 per cent of new donors.

The number of 17-24 year olds registering has fallen in recent years, prompting a drive to recruit more life savers of the future.

Shari Smart, a student who has made three donations since she signed up a year ago, said: “I find it simple and no trouble. It’s not painful or anything. If you expect to receive blood if you ever need it, you should be willing to donate it. It saves lives.”
