From alsatians to poodles dogs are a man’s best friend – but some breeds are proving more popular than others.

The French bulldog has been gaining popularity in Romford but the town’s favourite breed is the Staffordshire bull terrier.

Ownership of French bulldogs has increased by 703 per cent in the town over the last five years – a rise attributed to its popularity among celebrities and strong presence on social media site, Instagram.

Celebrity owners of the hounds include Leonardo DiCaprio and famous pets such as Mannie the French bulldog have tens of thousands of followers on social media.

The celebrity factor has also been attributed to a the rise of the chihuahuas, toy poodles and pugs which have also recorded a big increase in popularity in Romford.

Kennel Club secretary, Caroline Kisko, said: “We are not only seeing celebrity dog ownership influence Romford’s choice of dog, but are now seeing dogs who are celebrities in their own right, leading to a huge increase in dog breed popularity in Romford and the rest of the UK.”

Romford’s second most popular dog is a labrador retriever, followed by a German shepherd and cocker spaniel. The French bulldog’s dramatic rise in popularity has seen it ranked ninth.

The town differed from national trends, which were topped by Labrador retriever, followed by cocker spaniel and English springer spaniel.

The Kennel Club has issued a warning reminding potential dog owners to research breeds.

Ms Kisko said: “This can result in people making the wrong choice when it comes to dog ownership, choosing a dog that is not right for their lifestyle simply because it is cute or popular on social media. It is important to remember that every breed is different and one of the reasons dogs end up in rescue is because people make rash choices without doing the proper research.

Dog lovers can meet more than 200 dog breeds, and the top dogs of Instagram at the Kennel Club’s Eukanuba Discover Dogs event at ExCeL London on Saturday and Sunday (October 17 and 18).
