Firefighters from four stations spent two hours bringing a fire that destroyed a number of single storey garages under control.

Emergency services were first called to Dagenham Road, Rush Green, at just before 1.30pm this afternoon, with the last fire fighters leaving the scene at 3.34pm.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade confirmed that four fire engines and 20 fire fighters from Harold Hill, Wennington, Hornchurch and Romford stations all attended at the scene.

Around a quarter of the garages, situated behind a row of shops, were destroyed by the flames.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is now under investigation.

Speaking while the fire was ongoing, one eyewitness, who works in a nearby office, praised the reaction of the emergency services.

He said: “The smoke was billowing out in front of us a little while ago, but it seems to be under control now.

“But you know what these fires are like, if you’re not careful putting them out it can all kick up again.”
