In homage to her “role model” mum Ann, who died four years ago, a former hairdresser plucked up the courage to fulfil her dream of becoming a carer.

Samanther Johnson, 26, of Romford, always wanted helps others, but never thought she would be able to get a career that would allow her to do so.

“When I was a little I always wanted to be a vet, nurse, or doctor – something that is helping the lives of others,” she told the Recorder.

“My mum said to me ‘do you see the pattern’ - you obviously want to help others’.”

As Samanther got older however, she lacked confidence to pursue her goal and fell into hairdressing.

“I left school in 2007 and my mum’s life took a turn for the worst,” she said.

“Mum was no longer able to work and was suffering with chronic lung disease and only had one lung.

“Sadly, this was not just the only problem as her body was starting to shut down one organ at a time.”

Despite good days and bad days, Ann would carry on as best she could.

Samanther said: “Over the next five years my mum spent most of her life in hospital, she would come home for a few days before going back again.

“When I had her at home I would be there helping her with anything she needed.

“My heart broke watching my beautiful mummy fading away in front of me, so young, with so much to live for.

“There was nothing I could do apart from make her comfortable and show her how strong I was going to be, while making her proud and letting her know that I will keep chasing my dreams like she always wanted me to.”

In 2013 Ann, aged 50, lost her battle and Samanther vowed to follow her ambitions.

“Lisa and Jennie, owners of Radfield Home Care in Havering told me about their company and asked if I would be interested in being a carer.

“I was so glad when they asked me – someone was finally giving me the chance.

“Knowing I kept my promise to my mum gives me all the confidence I need to be successful in my new beginning.”
