An investigation is underway into how a large stack of waste caught fire yesterday evening on a Rainham industrial estate.

Fire crews from Wennington, Hornchurch and Dagenham were called to the blaze on Ferry Lane at about 5.30pm, and are currently still on the site. They used a mechanical digger to turn over the waste to make sure all the flames were out, and have been damping down the stack overnight.

Police said there had been some temporary road closures but that all routes had since been reopened.
