Hundreds of residents in Hornchurch, Emerson Park and Elm Park will receive the new scratch and sniff cannabis-scented cards - to help them grass up any weed-growing neighbours.

They are due through letterboxes tomorrow and Saturday and will help people recognise the pungent smell of the illegal plant.

The green-and-black card, which contains no drugs, also describes how to recognise tell-tale signs of cannabis husbandry.

The scheme, organised by charity Crimestoppers, is to coincide with a series of police operations combating marijuana cultivation.

Insp Clare McCarthy, from Havering Police, said: “This unusual idea is designed to make our streets safer for everyone.”

Havering’s RM11 and RM12 postcodes are thought to be marijuana farm hotspots.

Contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or or police on 101.
