The family of a bouncer stabbed to death outside his house donated £1,020 to the animal charity in his memory six months after the killing.

Ricky Hayden, 27, was killed in Gibbfield Close, Chadwell Heath, in September last year, leaving mum Suzanne Hedges determined to remember him by raising money for good causes.

Since his death, she’s raised funds with friends and family, donating the proceeds to the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) on Monday as a thank-you for their work supporting the family’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Roxy, who she says hasn’t been the same since the death of her “best mate”.

“She’s not the same dog – she was Ricky’s best mate,” the 49-year-old said. “They’ve [PDSA] been so good to her and it’s really nice that money donated to the family can help remember Ricky in this way.”

In the six months since his death, friends and family have remembered with Ricky with fundays, a memorial club night at Kosho in Romford, where he worked as a bouncer, and memorial wrist bands and bumper stickers.

And Suzanne said the family will continue to remember Ricky with fundraisers.

“We plan to remember Ricky like this for the rest of our lives,” she said. “He touched so many people’s hearts.”

Three 19-year-olds have been charged in connection with the incident, in which Ricky’s dad Paul Hayden was also stabbed.

Tommy Roome of Rams Grove, Chadwell Heath, and Tarrel Hinds of Manford Cross, Chigwell, plead not guilty to Ricky’s murder and the attempted murder of Paul and will go on trial at the Old Bailey on June 19.

Appearing alongside them will be Kevin Malamba of Rodney Road, Southwark, who is charged with perverting the course of justice.
