More details regarding the two former Hornchurch footballers Reiss Noel and Joe Woolley banned for match fixing in Australia have been heard in court recently.

Last Thursday, Magistrate Duncan Reynolds heard how defender Noel had screamed at team-mate Woolley to let the ball in or risk not fulfilling their promise to fix a game in the Victorian Premier League for a betting syndicate.

Woolley and Noel were charged and fined with match fixing in December 2013, but more documents were read out last Thursday and the Guardian newspaper have released previously unread details of what the former Urchins players told police in their statements.

During one match against Green Gully, Woolley and Noel’s team, Southern Stars, were required to lose 4-0 but were only two goals down.

Noel wasn’t playing so he went behind the goal where Woolley was in action and started instructing and telling the keeper that he had to let the next shots in.

In a statement to the police, Noel said: “I remember getting a call when we were losing 2-0 and the boss saying ‘this better f****** happen’.

“I would be yelling to Joe that we don’t have long, we need goals, don’t save it.”

The Southern Stars only lost 3-0 in that semi-professional league fixture and therefore failed to fulfill their promise to local ringleader Segaran “Gerry” Subramaniam.

After the game, Noel said how he screamed at Southern Stars team-mate Ryan Hervel because they hadn’t followed the instructions they had been told.

The former Hornchurch defender said: “I was stressed and said that we have to do as they instruct as we basically don’t know how much money they have lost and how they would react.”

Former Urchins keeper Wooley also explained to the police how the players involved were promised cash bonuses if they followed the instruction from the betting syndicate.

The Guardian state Noel was meant to earn $2000 a month for living expenses and would then receive $3000 for each fixed game, however the money didn’t always arrive.

Woolley said: “I knew it was wrong but they were going to give us accommodation. We all thought it was a bit strange but we were going to use it to our advantage.”

Alongside Noel and Woolley, David Obaze has been fined and banned from the game indefinitely for admitting to try to fix games.
