A new fitness complex including swimming pool could be built in Hornchurch, if a proposal is given the green light.
Havering Council’s cabinet will discuss the plan to replace Hornchurch Sports Centre, in Harrow Lodge Park, next week,
Regular gym-goers, swimmers and fitness fanatics could see the existing building demolished and rebuilt on the leisure centre’s car park if planning permission is granted.
The existing swimming pool and associated facilities were opened in 1956, while the sports hall was built in 1987.
A report by Havering Council has predicted that approximately £3.6million would need to be spent on basic repairs and maintenance in the coming years with more money potentially being needed to maintain the “high quality environment that customers are increasingly expecting to experience”.
Cabinet members will also establish whether there is a strong business case for retaining and converting the existing sports hall into a multi-purpose entertainment venue, rather than demolishing it.
If the proposal goes ahead, a new car park would be built adjacent to the site of the existing Hornchurch Sports Centre. Temporary car park arrangements will be required during the period of construction .
Cabinet members will also discuss the possibility of investing in new health and fitness facilities at Central Park Leisure Centre, Gooshays Drive, Romford, and the continued funding of Chafford Sports Complex, Lambs Lane South, Rainham.
Cabinet will meet next Tuesday to discuss the proposal.
