Brentwood diver Chris Mehegan, who died in an English Channel expedition on Saturday, posted a picture on his Facebook of the ocean shortly before his final dive.
Mr Mehegan, 45, a former student at the Chafford School, in Rainham, was named by police as one of the two divers who died after getting into difficulties in the water off of Eastbourne.
He posted the image on Saturday morning and wrote: “Flat, calm, slightly overcast for today’s dive mid channel.”
Friends replied telling him to enjoy his dive.
Mr Mehegan and Peter Stanning, 44, from Highbury Hill, North London, were both airlifted by coastguard helicopter to Eastbourne District General Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The pair were diving as part of a group south of Eastbourne off a boat named the Channel Diver.
Dover Coastguard contact police at 1.40pm to report the two divers in difficulty.
Det Ch Insp Mark Ling said: “Tragically two divers have died after getting into difficulty while diving in the channel.”
Sussex Police are investigating the cause of the deaths and a post-mortem is expected to be carried out tomorrow.
