Urchins manager reflects on last night’s 1-0 Ryman League Cup loss at Billericay Town.

Hornchurch boss Jimmy McFarlane was encouraged by his side’s performance despite being knocked out of the Ryman League Cup with a 1-0 defeat at Billericay Town last night.

The Urchins created plenty of chances on the night, but succumbed to Rowan Liburd’s 61st minute effort, which will see the Blues face Whyteleafe in the quarter-finals.

And despite the result disappointing McFarlane he was more than happy with the showing from his side, especially with the likes of youngsters Callum Chafer and Courtney Homans coming into the side.

“It was probably one of our better performances of the season,” said McFarlane. “I was really pleased with some of the younger boys and I feel anyone was at the game would agree we were the better side.

“But scoring goals has been our problem all season and that was the case again. “Our 18-year-old goalkeeper Callum Chafer wasn’t really tested.

“They had one shot and scored one goal, but that’s probably one of the reasons why they are doing well this season.”

He added: “Young Calum and Courtney did really well and there were more positives than negatives. The only disappointment was the result.”

Striker Martin Tuohy was missing for the Urchins last night after tweaking his hamstring after coming on in Saturday’s goalless draw with Bognor Regis Town, but his absence was more of a precaution for McFarlane as they prepare to travel to Hendon on Saturday.
