Elm Park’s Royal British Legion enjoyed a day at the races in aid of a good cause.

Fifty-three legion members pitched up at Newmarket Racecourse on Saturday for the Poppy Race Day meeting, rubbing shoulders with other branches from across the region.

The fundraising didn’t stop when the races did. As well as visiting stalls for the Royal British Legion inside the course, the Elm Park group held a raffle on the coach home, bagging £107 for the branch’s Poppy Appeal, and received a donation of £52.

Organiser and chairman Barry Mugglestone said the club would consider going again in 2014.

“Some members asked for Vegas but I might struggle with that as a day out,” he said. “Thanks to the members for attending – what a great group of people to go out with.”

To join the Branch, simply turn up to the club in Maylands Avenue on the second Wednesday in the month at 7.30pm.
