Ukip’s nominee for Hornchurch and Upminster has called on voters to reject “a Tory careerist” and choose him on June 8.

Lawrence Webb, a Havering councillor in Harold Hill, said if elected he would take on the Conservative council and stop it building houses on greenfield sites.

He also attacked his Tory rival Julia Dockerill, who has been selected to replace Dame Angela Watkinson, the current Conservative MP.

Dame Angela is standing down after 16 years due to ill health, and the Tories have chosen Ms Dockerill, a Tower Hamlets councillor, as their nominee.

“Voters have got a clear choice between a careerist, who has been parachuted in to the seat, or a local resident who knows their issues,” he said.

“I hope they read the election literature and make an informed decision.”

Cllr Webb stood for Ukip in Hornchurch and Upminster in 2015, coming second with 13,977 votes.

He added: “The Tories are going mess up Brexit, so if there are one or two Ukip MPs we can make sure Brexit actually means Brexit.”
