The Conservative candidate for the Hornchurch and Upminster constituency has been chosen.

It was decided last night that Cllr Julia Dockerill will be in the running for the position.

Cllr Dockerill has been a councillor in Tower Hamlets since 2014, where she represents the St Katharine’s and Wapping ward and works as chief of staff to Conservative MP candidate for Cities of London and Westminster Mark Field.

She was up against London Assembly member and former adviser to David Cameron Shaun Bailey and policy special adviser in the Department for Transport Simon Jones.

Dame Angela Watkinson, who has been an MP for the constituency since 2001, announced she was standing down last week.

She had been taking a step back from her Parliamentary work after she suffered from a minor stroke last year.
