West met east this month when a group of Havering youngsters visited China as part of a special excursion.

The 22 Havering Sixth Form College students walked the Great Wall of China, marvelled at the Forbidden City, dropped into a foreign languages school and took a tour of Beijing’s Olympic Bird’s Nest Stadium for the once-in-a-lifetime two week trip.

The students, who are studying for the International Baccalaurete, visited the Asian country as part of the course’s creativity, action and services unit.

Tutor Brian Martin said: “The teachers and students at the Chinese school were so warm and friendly and made us feel so very welcome. They had put up a huge banner attached to the school building to greet us.

“It was very interesting for our students to see what happens in their class lessons and we even had a game of basketball with the Chinese youngsters.”
