Broadford Primary School in Faringdon Avenue, Harold Hill, took 30 children to Lee Valley Velopark after successfully completing their Bikeability level 2 course at school.

“The pupils have been so successful with this that we now wanted to offer them a different opportunity to further and extend their skills and confidence,” explained headteacher, Malcolm Drakes.

“The Lee Valley Velopark is the only cycle park in the country where you can experience moutain bike trails, BMX tracks, road racing and a velodrome all in one location.

“Our pupils loved it.”

First they had a coach show them the mountain bike trail before they had a second session where they could cut loose on the humps and bumps of the BMX arena.

“I learnt so much on the day and I didn’t realise you need to peddle as you go round the trails and you can use your body weight and position to gain momentum,” said Year 6 pupil Charlie Birdsey, 11.

“I was a bit nervous of the BMX track to start with as the ramp was extremely steep.

“However after a few goes I had conquered my fears and I can’t wait to go back in the Summer term.”
