A new free school for Havering has today been approved by the government, with prime minister David Cameron praising plans to drive up standards as “truly commendable”.

It is not clear when Drapers’ Primary School, to be situated in Harold Hill, will be opened, but today’s announcement by the Department for Education marks a significant step towards it becoming a reality.

The school, one of 18 primary free schools nationwide approved today, will have 420 places for children aged three to 11.

“I’m delighted that Drapers’ Primary School will be opening in Havering, one of the 38 free schools proposals announced today,” said Mr Cameron.

“Free schools, many of which are set up by parents and teachers, are around twice as likely to be rated outstanding by Ofsted as other schools.”

He added: “The plans this school has to drive up standards and help young people achieve their full potential are truly commendable.”

Havering Council’s Meg Davis, Conservative cabinet member for children and learning, said the town hall was “pleased”, given the “current pressures on primary school places across the board”.

She added: “This school will ensure we have many more school place available for families in Harold Hill, so is great news for local people.”
