A Cranham school is celebrating double success after both its boys and girls Kwik Cricket teams hit other schools for six.

Year five and six students at James Oglethorpe Primary School in Ashvale Gardens, came out on top as they faced other schools in the borough at Rainham Cricket Club, and will now represent Havering against other schools from all over Essex.

Both the boys and girls teams have been training with two parent helpers - Jason Lendon and Joe Downs - since just after Christmas, and this is the first time that the school has ever won either of the tournaments.

Headteacher, Hayley Durrant, said that she was “immensely proud” of both teams, and said that the students great attitudes and determination has carried on into the classroom.

She said: “We have come back with two cups and that’s amazing for us.

“Jason and Joe have been great, they’ve been teaching them after school and all the children have loved it.”

Jason, who has two daughters at the school - and one who has just left - said that he was fed up of seeing his eldest daughter go along to sporting events and feel like they were only turning up to make up the numbers, so him and Joe decided to give them some extra coaching.

He said: “I can’t remember them ever winning anything so I’m extremely proud of them all.”

Both the boys and girls teams will now take part in the county finals at Billericay Cricket Club.
