Pupils from an Upminster school proved they were tri-hards after winning a national sports competition.

The mixed team from Coopers’ Company and Coborn School, in St Mary’s Lane, beat rivals from 25 other schools to take home the title of English Champions in the 2012 Triathlon England - National Schools Championships, in the Year 7-8 age group category.

Finlay Hyde, Ben Davis, Lois Wyatt and Hannah Binning, crossed the finish line in just over 36 minutes, after a greulling 200m swim, followed by a 1500m run.

It was part of a triathalon taster event, organised by Triathlon England.

Mark Duncan, PE teacher, said: “It was the first time we entered this event and since triathlon is a sport that is growing within our school, we thought it would be a great experience for the children. Our team did brilliantly to win in such a competitive race.
