Children got active during half term taking part in athletics activities at The Campion School, Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch.

The children from Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7, were taught the basic technics of sports including javelin, discus, shot-put, hurdles, sprinting and relay.

They also performed different exercises to improve their co-ordination and agility.

Joanne Day, a qualified athletics coach who works across primary schools and at Havering Athletics Club, said: “It’s an immense pleasure seeing the children develop their athletics skills while learning new techniques which they would not have the opportunity to learn at school.”

The event was part of the nationwide Athletics 360 programme, which aims to teach children the skills to run, jump, throw and develop their full physical potential.

Mrs Day has also started working with Havering Mind, Hornchurch, a charity which supports people with mental health issues, organising athletics workshops at Hornchurch Sport Centre.
