A long-awaited new school has applied for permission to spend its first year in the grounds of an existing Hornchurch primary school.

Concordia Academy has submitted a planning application to open in temporary buildings in the grounds of Langtons Junior Academy, Westland Avenue.

If permission is granted the free school will accept 30 pupils who will be taught at the site until the permanent school opens in Union Road, Romford.

A spokesman from REAch2 Academy Trust, which will run the school, said: “Planning permission for the temporary site at Langtons Junior Academy – also part of the REAch2 family – was submitted last month and we look forward to hearing the outcome of that in August.

“Concordia would then open in Langtons Junior site, before moving to the permanent site in Romford in September 2017.”

Langtons Infant School is a 10 to 13 minute car journey from the Romford site and REAch2 has said it will put on a shuttle bus between the town centre and the temporary buildings.

Concordia Academy was given permission to build a new school on the site of the former Oldchurch Hospital, in February.

Havering Council leader Cllr Roger Ramsey revealed last week that the authority would provide a grant of up to £100,000 to ensure the school opens.

REAch 2 is seeking permission to build two temporary one storey blocks on play space at Langtons School.

The school was originally planned to open in 2014 under Oasis Academy, but failed to after temporary accommodation fell through. In October 2015 the provider withdrew and the project was handed to REAch2.

When the school is complete it will have the capacity for 630 pupils aged between four and 11,

REAch2 plans to reach this capacity by 2022.

Concordia Academy’s admissions policy states: “Concordia Academy will be a nurturing school, firmly rooted in strong, cultural, social and moral values.”

Havering Council will make a decision on the plans by August 17.
