It’s not every day you look up to see the Queen walking over to you, but one lucky mum experienced just that back in 1997, as she tells the Recorder.

Vicki Parker, from Gidea Park, was just 37 at the time and was a stay-at-home mum.

Today, she is a police officer working at Romford police station.

It was the day before Princess Diana’s funeral on September 6, 1997, which is why the memory remains so poignant.

Vicki said: “It was by pure chance that I met the Queen. There were thousands of flowers down the Mall, and I was there with my mum and nine-week-old baby son William.

“The police had cordoned off an area for the public to stand so that the Queen could walk in to see the flowers that were left.”

Vicki became separated from her mother, sister and William’s pushchair by the rope.

She said: “Crowds were then moved back and I was left just standing at the front.

“A few moments later, the Queen’s car pulled up and she got out with Prince Philip to view the flowers. She wore an all-black dress, hat and handbag.

“After looking at all of the flowers, they walked back to the car and as the Queen was about to get in, she looked over and walked back to me.

“She asked why I had such a young baby with me and where I had come from.

“I was a little embarrassed and didn’t know what to say. I told her that we got separated by the rope and the pushchair was left with my family.”

Vicki added that the Queen was very nice.

With Her Majesty celebrating 60 years on the throne, Vicki believes “the Queen and the royal family are brilliant, especially with all the pomp and pageantry.

“It is lovely that we have got a monarch,” she said.
