A Romford school has made improvements thanks to its “determined” strong leadership, inspectors have said.

Ofsted gave Bower Park School a satisfactory mark for its overall effectiveness as a school, and a good rating for its capacity for sustained improvement.

Inspectors were impressed that “staff share a clear direction for the school and morale is high”.

They added that middle leaders “feel especially empowered” to make decisions about their areas.

Inspectors added: “Because of the success they have had in raising achievement, they are confidently setting increasingly challenging targets for students’ attainment.”

The inspectors’ report said the school, in Havering Road North, provides students with a “satisfactory and improving education”.

It added that since the last inspection in 2009 the school has tackled the key areas for development effectively and a number of areas of the school’s work are now good.

The school’s self evaluation was noted as good and the school has a good capacity to keep improving.

The report added: “Determined and effective senior leadership has brought about clear systems which are being used consistently across the school.”

Progress

Inspectors said “students are generally well motivated to learn because they find the curriculum interesting and tailored to meet their needs, although they do not always show this in well-presented work”.

The school was praised for “good-quality care and guidance,” which has helped individual students resolve difficulties to improve progress.

Ofsted said the school’s GCSE results have steadily improved and the gap between the school and the national performance levels has been “eradicated,” and is now in line with the national average. It also said there was a “significant improvement” in the number of pupils getting five good GCSEs.
