A fight between two dogs outside Romford station ended with a bus driver being taken to hospital.

Emergency services were called to the incident, which involved two Staff-type dogs, at 10.30 this morning (Wednesday). Police said a female bus driver and a male member of the public had been bitten.

The London Ambulance Service said the woman, believed to be in her 40s, had been taken to Queen’s Hospital, Romford. The service was unable to supply details of her injuries.

An eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, said: “One dog was just locked on the other one and everybody was trying to separate them. They were in front of a bus so the driver got out, and she and a passer-by got in the middle of them.”

Brian Relf, of Thurloe Gardens, who was also at the scene, said: “I heard the fight before I saw it – by the time I got over there the dogs were being split up. It went on for about 25 to 30 seconds.

“A lot of people were screaming and shouting. There are young children around because it’s the school holidays. That could have been a kid and it could have been more serious. The woman’s hand was really badly bitten up.

“I’m a dog owner myself and if my dog behaved like that I’d have him put down.”

The woman’s bus is believed to have been a 248 heading toward Cranham.

Police have arrested one man for allowing his dog to be out of control in a public place.

A Stagecoach spokesman said: “One of our bus drivers and another member of the public went to the aid of a young lady walking her dog on a lead. Her dog was attacked by another dog not on a lead.

“Our driver received cuts to her left hand and was taken to hospital for treatment. Despite her injuries, she is expected to be back to work on Saturday. We would like to thank the driver for helping the young lady who was in difficulty and we wish her well in her recovery.”
