As news broke yesterday that the Duke of Edinburgh will no longer be carrying out royal engagements, the Recorder looks back at when he visited the borough.
The Queen, accompanied by Prince Philip, made a special trip to Havering in 2003 where they were greeted by thousands of cheering residents for Her Majesty’s first tour of Romford and Hornchurch.
The royal couple visited Romford Market and greeted well-wishers, schoolchildren and stallholders.
Among the crowds of people was former The Only Way is Essex star Amy Childs when she was 12-years-old, who met and presented the Queen with a bouquet of flowers.
During their tour, they also visited Redden Court School, in Cotswold Road, Harold Wood, Queen’s Theatre, in Billet Lane, Hornchurch, to unveil a plaque which launched the theatre’s 50th celebrations and the new HQ for the Havering Association for Voluntary and Community Organisations, in Eastern Avenue, Romford.
