Around 20 firefighters were called to a blaze at a disused landfill site in Rainham.

London Fire Brigade received multiple reports of a fire at a site 400m from Launders Lane at around 1.30am this morning (December 11).

Four fire engines attended and crews found a 20m sq area of land alight, which they brought under control by 5am.

A number of firefighters remain at the scene soaking the ground as of this morning, as the fire was deep-seated.

Fire crews from Hornchurch, Wennington and Dagenham attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is believed to be the natural breaking down of the materials deposited at that type of site.
