All the stops were pulled out for the street party in Newman Close, Hornchurch, today.

The party was six months in the making, so that residents who partied ten years ago for Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee could do so even bigger this time.

Angela Watkinson MP cut the ribbon to officially open the celebrations just after 4pm.

The Hornchurch and Upminster MP told the crowd about her memories of being a schoolgirl when King George VI died, and her shock at seeing her strict headmaster in tears.

Around 300 people then enjoyed a range of entertainment, including kids entertainment from Richard Hughes of Rocky’s Funhouse, The Thurrock Accordian Band and more.

Head of the organising committee Val Cooper, said: “We did it ten years ago for the Golden Jubilee, although it wasn’t quite so big as this.

“We’ve been planning it since January, and most people in the street have been involved.”

A raffle was held, in which one of the top prizes was a stay at the De Rougemont Manor, Warley.

Resident Raymond Hawkins, said: “They always support us here, they even said we could move the party there if there was torrential rain or anything.”
