A funeral-inspired protest walk will take place on Sunday and campaigners are urging residents to join them, dressed in black.
Tony Turvey, of Rainham Against Gravel Extraxtion (RAGE) has organised the walk in an attempt to stop the planning application for a gravel extraction site in Wennington Farm.
Protestors will walk down Wennington Road while a lorry drives alongside carrying a coffin, representing the “death of Wennington village.”
The plans submitted to the council would see digging for eight and a half years and angry protestors believe the increased traffic from lorries and diggers would bring dirt and mud to the roads.
Tony said: “We believe it will be the death of the village and damaging to whole of Rainham. We want residents to send a message that we don’t want the gravel extraction site here!”
“It will see thousands of extra lorry movements on the old A1406 [now A1306] bringing more dirt and danger to the area.”
Residents are being asked to meet at the Tesco car park in Wennington Road at 10.30am on Sunday. The walk will start at 11am and pass through the village, turning left at the Clock Tower and onto The Green near Saint Mary and St. Peter Church.
Supporter Graham Williamson, chairman of Adamsgate Action Group, said: “Rainham has been used as a dumping ground and despoiled for decades. We were promised no further dirty industries or applications would blight Rainham if the council could prevent it. Well they now have a chance to honour that promise and turn this application down!”
Dagenham and Rainahm Labour MP Jon Cruddas will also be joining in the protest.
He said: “I visited the site of the proposed extraction pit and was shocked to see the operation would back right onto people’s homes. The people of Wennington need to be heard and listened to by Havering Council.”
