A man found dead in his car in Gallows Corner Tesco may have been there for a month, a police spokesman has said.

Police had been searching for Behar Brace, 50, of Meadow Road, Romford, since September 26 after his concerned family reported him missing.

Havering Police used CCTV to trace the number plate of his blue Volkswagen Passat and tried to track his phone. He could not be found.

But on Wednesday he was discovered dead on the back seat of his vehicle in the car park of Tesco by supermarket staff after they allegedly noticed a smell.

A police spokesman said: “Automatic number plate recognition cameras were on the search for him but the cameras were never activated.

“His phone was checked too but we had no luck on that.”

When asked whether he had been in the car park for a month, she said: “That could have been the situation but we cannot confirm that at this stage.”

Mr Behar was found slumped on the back seat of his car, his rear window was tinted and leaflets blocked the view through other windows, she added.

Police confirmed Mr Behar dead at the scene and are treating the death as unexplained but not suspicious. His family were promptly notified.

An employee of Timpson, based in the Tesco store, said: “It was a car in the car park, a guy who cleans the car park and comes in early was complaining he could smell something.”

The Metropolitan Police are yet to rule out suicide and a post mortem will be held on Monday.
