An engineer will be taking part in a cycling challenge to celebrate the opening of a new cycling and walking route in the borough.

Mark Philpotts, 40, from Geoffrey Avenue, Harold Wood, will be cycling the London leg of the 39-mile route for Pedal On UK organised by Sustrans on Friday.

The route in Havering will connect up existing networks to create a continuous link close to the Ingrebourne River, overcoming barriers like the A12 and A127 with safer road crossings and traffic-free areas.

Mark Philpotts, who is a volunteer ranger with Sustrans, said: “As I travel round the borough it helps me to get to some sites quicker than using the other on-road routes.

“And my family can make the most of it at weekends too, without the fear of having to travel on one section with a 40 mph road with no cycle lanes.”
