A rail company reported assaults on two members of staff to the police after a passenger threw up and caused a service to be abandoned at Upminster.

The c2c train was forced to stop at the station around 11pm on Wednesday last week after the passenger vomited onto the floor around the door of the driver’s cabin.

Once it stopped however, the female driver and another member of staff were allegedly assaulted by a different passenger at the station.

Police were called and a woman and a man were both arrested on suspicion of common assault.

A spokesman for c2c said: “We apologise for the inconvenience to passengers on the train, caused by the actions of one passenger which resulted in the driver’s working conditions becoming unbearable.

“This delay was exacerbated because c2c had to call the British Transport Police following an alleged assault against two members of our staff by another passenger, which prevented the empty train from being removed and our service resuming.”

The next train arrived about 45 minutes later.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “A 32-year-old woman from Westcliff-on-Sea was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and a 50-year-old man from Southend-on- Sea was arrested on suspicion of common assault.

“Both have been released on bail pending further enquiries until Saturday, 9 February.”

As recently reported in the Recorder, on Monday, December 17, a train was taken out of service for cleaning at Shenfield after an inebriated passenger was sick on it and taken away in an ambulance.
