Recorder readers have strongly opposed the granting of planning permission for an “established” gypsy and traveller site on Green Belt land in Romford.
Havering Council’s Regulatory Services committee met last Thursday to decide the fate of the pitch on Vinegar Hill, Lower Bedfords Road.
Occupants have lived on the land near the junction with Straight Road for 10 years without formal planning permission after a temporary right to remain expired in 2004.
In a poll posted on the Recorder’s website, nearly 80 per cent opposed the application, which sees a small number of individuals permitted to remain on the site for another three years.
Cllr Ron Ower, the committee’s vice chair, said the move was temporary measure to accommodate gypsies and travellers in the borough as part of its statutory duty, and the site was “established”.
The Residents’ Group councillor added, of the decision to grant planning permission: “From memory, I do not think there was any opposition [at the meeting] to that one.”
