A concerned parent has written to some of the borough’s schools, asking for their assistance in tackling the recent spike in moped crime.

Father-of-two Ian James, 45, sent an open letter to about 14 schools in and around the Elm Park area, requesting for headteachers’ help in publicising a meeting with police - due to take place at the Elm Park Baptist Church on July 15 at 2pm - to parents.

In the letter, he says: “As you are no doubt aware the amount of crime being committed by youths on stolen mopeds has seen a significant increase over the last few weeks.

“With the fast approaching school holidays, I fear that our children are under increased threat and risk of these crimes.

“I and many residents, will appreciate any support you can give as we endeavour to make our streets and open spaces safe again.”

Growing up in Elm Park but now living in Braintree, Ian says he is very concerned about children’s safety in the area.

A few schools have already responded to Ian’s email with some sharing his letter to parents.

He said: “My daughters still live in the borough so obviously I am worried about what’s going on, especially with the summer holidays coming up.

“We need to make sure our children are safe so they can enjoy going outside without feeling scared about what could happen.”

The Recorder will be focusing on moped crime in Havering in this week’s paper.
