Operation Big Wing to crack down on criminals in Havering

Police were out in force across Havering on Wednesday to disrupt criminals and reassure residents.

The activity was part of Operation Big Wing – a London-wide day of activity designed to cut crime.

Operations included three people arrested in Harold Hill on suspicion of drugs offences during an early morning raid.

In Havering-atte-Bower, one woman was cautioned for possessing cannabis.

A wanted man was also arrested in Romford.

Insp John Goodwin said: “We regularly patrol areas targeted by criminals across the borough. Today we are working with specialist units to ensure we are as visible as possible.

“We will work using all the tools available to ensure we catch those who commit crime in our borough.”

Officers patrolled on foot and bike, around burglary and anti-social behaviour hotspots.

In Rainham, police stopped and checked more than 70 vehicles for insurance, MOTs and driver documents, and patrolled shopping areas.

There was a knife detector in Upminster Bridge and 70 victims of crime were visited. Commuters and students at several schools were also given advice.

At Queen’s Hospital, cadets helped the Brooklands Safer Neighbourhoods Team give out crime prevention advice.

Borough commander Chief Supt Jason Gwillim said: “Today has been about showing residents of Havering that we have listened to their concerns and that we are committed to taking action around them.

“We will continue to develop these areas over the coming weeks and months and strive to make Havering a better and safer place to live and work.”
