The mother of one of paedophile David Bright’s victims has said she is pleased the former Havering schools employee is now behind bars and cannot harm any more children.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke out after Bright was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday at Snaresbrook Crown Court after pleading guilty to 13 counts of making and possessing indecent images of children and one count of sexual touching of a child under 13.

A 15th count, which he pleaded not guilty to, has been laid on file.

The mother said: “Three years means he is on the sex offenders register for life, which means he will never again be able to work in any profession which involves having contact with children and he can hopefully not harm any other children ever again.

“That’s all we wanted. Life would have been good, but it is not realistic and it [the sentence] has to be within the restrictions of the law.

“We were always told five years was the maximum he could get for these types of crimes. You have to be realistic - you can’t be controlled by anger.”

Former verbal behavioural specialist Bright, who was employed by Havering Council and worked in special needs schools, was arrested on November 19 and three victims were identified by images found on his computer.

The paedophile took photographs of the boys on the toilet, including a picture of one of them urinating, and also touched one victim’s legs.

Over 2,000 indecent images of children were discovered altogether.

Judge David Radford said at the sentencing: “You have committed a gross breach of trust and what, I say, was cynical offending on your part, for your sexual gratification.

“The children were vulnerable and that made it difficult for them to resist what you did.”

He added: “Some may believe that the sentences are quite inadequate for what he did in relation to their children.

“But I’m constrained to pass such sentences as the law permits.”

Prosecutor Pamela Oon added: “He told the police in his interview that since the age of 12 or 13 he has had an attraction to young children, predominantly boys.”

Although the impact on the victims may be minimal, as their parents said they would have been oblivious to the crimes, the strain on their families will continue to be huge.

The mother of one of the boys added: “All I want is for him to not ever do this again and ruin someone else’s life like he’s ruined mine.

“My life will never be the same.”

Cheryl Coppell, chief executive of Havering Council, said after the sentencing: “No sentence would ever feel enough for the despicable acts he carried out, but he is now behind bars and will never be able to work with children again.”
